Behind the Scenes
Managing Expectations on Set
Filming Penelope made me come to two very important realizations: one, clear communication is essential while working in large groups and two, not everything turns out the way you want it to.
Like Bootsy Collins, I created the initial plot and treatment for Penelope, but I did not write the script. In fact, my role came at the very end of filming; as Supervising Editor, the bulk of my work was supposed to occur after the production stage. Some serious miscommunication put the film in a risky position, so I asserted myself in roles beyond Supervising Editor in order to see the film to completion. I edited scripts, watched for continuity during film shoots, edited the piece, and lent a hand in the Art Department. Sure, the final version of Penelope may not be what I initially envisioned, but I made this film the best it could possibly be.
